Race Evening |
|
Written by John Parnell |

9th November 2007 |

THE TALL SHIPS YOUTH TRUST
PORTSMOUTH SUPPORT BRANCH
We would like to offer our thanks to The Portchester Sailing club Commodore and members for allowing us to hold a very successful fund raising event on November 3rd.
A Night at the Races was enjoyed by some 65 members and their guests, and included some of our committee members, who operated the tote, and handled the race card distribution, and cash intake and payouts.
The total income for the evening was £1501, made up of sponsorship, ticket sales, and bets placed.
Following tote payouts, catering, and running costs, the end result was a profit of £788.
The atmosphere was that of a real race course, and as the evening progressed, the cash flow appeared to increase!
We believe that everyone enjoyed the evening, and the Trust funds received will enable us to provide bursaries for four youngsters to take part in our Tall ships voyages.
We hope that this event can be repeated next year in your social calendar of events.
With our grateful thanks,
John Parnell
Acting branch chairman

MARLOW ROPES EVENING |

Marlow Ropes Evening.
On Thursday 25th October 2007, Portchester Sailing Club hosted a Marlow Ropes Evening, led by Steven Foy of Marlow Ropes. The event was extremely well attended by Members.
Our thanks again to Steven Foy for teaching us about Marlow Ropes and for his patience in teaching us doublebraid covered eye splicing (which he had to run through twice, due to so many of us wanting to learn).
The knot tying competition was closely fought and ably refereed by Reg Sillence. The recipient of the bottle of whiskey was Derek Underwood, who managed to tie six knots in an impressive 28.4 seconds. Second place went to George Simmons in just over thirty seconds. The Chocolates were wrested from Mark Oakey with a late challenge by Joe Simmons, who just pipped his time. Our thanks to Reg for his time and arbitration skills.
The evening would not have been such a success without the bar team. Our huge thanks to Kath Douglas and all who helped her, it was much appreciated. Thanks too to all who helped to clear up at the end of the evening.
Congratulations to Gayle Thomas who produced the best splice of the evening.
The next Training evening is on Thursday 17th January, with Mike Dymond. He will be unravelling the wonders of passage planning and sailing abroad. We look forward to seeing you there.

Round Portsea |
|
Written by Gerry Anderson |
|
25th September 2007 |
|
I joined Roger Kenchington for a paddle and sail round Portsea Island. As there were no other takers we left the club just after 10 and were soon into Portscreek. Down with the mast and a paddle under the next 6 bridges to arrive in Langstone harbour at about 11.30. Up with the mast and a quick sail down to the Mulberry harbour to find the sandbank was still under water. After a longish wait and a bite to eat the club RIB turned up to provide some company and take some photos. We left with a strengthening wind at 2.15 and used the last of the ebbing tide to leave the harbour. 50 minutes later we were at Portsmouth harbour entrance after some minor excitement with assorted ferries. A rapid trip up the harbour brought us safely back to the club just after 4.00pm. |

Beaulieu Rally 11/12 August |
|
Written by Alan Sayle |
|
13th August 2007 |
I cannot believe that was the first time that we have visited the Beaulieu River in Sea Star. What a beautiful river! The marina is expensive but £14.50 on the upstream piles brought us the beauty of the river and the entertainment of watching the boats running aground and trying to tie up to the piles.
Mischief was an early arrival and soon had Lady Farouche and White Gold alongside. Pauillac joined us and taught us how to pronounce her name. In the afternoon we could have walked the 2 miles into the village but instead visited the Master Builder pub and found out why it’s best to take your own beer to Bucklers Hard.
The barbecue did justice to the picturesque setting on the green below the eighteenth century terraces of Bucklers Hard. Although Mogil Maids juggling skills dampened some spirits the culinary highlight was fresh mackerel courtesy of Nancy Kelly. Seraph professed not to have known about the barbecue but were able to scrounge a few sausages. As dusk fell Mogil Maid’s tender bounced off everything solid between the jetty and the mooring piles and Nimrod, who had braved Christchurch Bay for an afternoon blast, only arrived in time for drinks aboard Gallivant.
On Sunday some sensibly set off early to catch the eastbound tide. Most of us emerged later to enjoy a bumpy but sunny Solent amidst the disappointed Fastnet spectators for a fresh down wind trip home.

Vectis 2007 |

22nd July 2007 |

Despite the gloomy forecasts all week the day was perfect with plenty of sunshine and a pleasant force 3 which through the day went from SW to SE.
Only 3 dinghies and 6 cruisers raced - the worst turn-out for years. Perhaps there were too many hang-overs from the Summer Ball.
Some members turned up for the barbeque on the beach. See what you missed! |

Bembridge Rally - 14&15 July 2007 |
|
Written by Alan Sayle |
|
19th July 2007 |
Wind and tide combined to give an exhilarating sail over to and home from Bembridge Harbour for the Club Rally.
Seven boats and their crews took advantage of the discounted Club booking for the pontoon space including True Blew, Leoni, Farouche, Mogil Maid and Sea Star. Once there, some enjoyed the cricket match and live music at the Vine in St Helens. Others including new members, the Bovis-Coulter family in Genesis of Portchester entertained themselves on the beach and later with a barbeque at the harbour side. The late arrival of Beltana from Alderney on their way home from Vannes kept the stories and beer flowing. So if you want to know what really happened at the fuel berth in Concarneau – well you should have been there!

SuperCup 2 - 14/15 July |
|
Written by Paul Bayliss |
|
19th July 2007 |
|
The second and final SuperCup Weekend at Portchester SC for 2007, generously supported by Andark, Crewsaver, Dinghy Sailing Magazine, English Heritage, Marine Superstore and Sunsail, was another success on and off the water. With a total of 45 entries for the event over the two weekends, and some notable performances from the younger sailors in the fleet, racing was highly competitive and produced a very worthy overall winner from the eight races.
Saturdays racing was held in bright sun and breezy conditions of 15-20 knots, which tested all of the competitors on the water. A P-shaped course kept the sailors busy, and two races were turned quickly around giving plenty of opportunity to enjoy the afternoon sunshine on the club balcony. After the results had been calculated, the remarkable result was that the key places were identical for both races, with the Topper of Mark Oakey taking two first places, closely followed by Nick Martin and Mariea Oakey in an RS400 and Rob Eastwood in a Solo. Other notable performances by junior sailors were rewarded with spot prizes, namely James Twose in a Topper, Joe Simmons in a Taz and Sea Scouts, Ryan Patterson and Shaun Kitchener in their Laser Pico, all of whom conquered the challenging conditions over 2 races.
Prizes were also awarded to the fleet of keen pupils who were participating in the Club Training event on the Saturday with 10 youngsters enjoying learning to sail in Optimist dinghies. The day was rounded off with competitors enjoying a Barbeque at the club, whilst being entertained by live music into the evening.
Sundays racing was going to decide the series, but not before the first race was turned upside down by a nearby thunderstorm which killed the wind and soaked the competitors and race committee alike. Thankfully, it didn't prejudice too many positions and the racing continued without further disruption. For the second race, the sun even threatened to put in a performance at times, whilst a shifty easterly 10 knot breeze kept the tactics interesting. Mark Oakey nearly completed a clean sweep of race wins for the weekend, but was just pipped at the post by Rob Eastwood who was avenging his over-the-line disqualification from the first race. However, all importantly Nick and Mariea in the RS400 found the conditions a little warm, so decided to take a brief dip to cool off, dropping them down the rankings to fifth in the final race and crucially ending their hopes of the top spot.
This left Mark Oakey a very worthy winner of the series, receiving the inaugural SuperCup trophy, along with superb prizes which were also spread out down to 9th place. Thanks were given to all of those involved in organising the weekends, the sponsors and all the competitors for making the events such a success. It is worth noting that six out of the top 8 places in the overall results were occupied by junior sailors from PSC a statistic that points to a vibrant and healthy future of the club.
Full results are on www.portchestersc.com, along with some images from the event.
Preliminary overall results:
1st Mark Oakey - Topper
2nd Nick Martin / Mariea Oakey - RS400
3rd Adam Oakey - Topper
4th Mark Kenworth - Laser
5th Joe Simmons - Taz
6th Mark Bishop - Topper
7th James Twose - Topper
8th Ryan Patterson / Xuereb / Kitchener - Laser Pico

Portchester Win and Win the Combined Harbour Regatta |
|
Written by Gerry Anderson |
|
1st July 2007 |
|
Russell and Jo Peace's Merlin won the cruiser trophy by a slim 16 seconds from Hardway's Pink Lime. Paul Bayliss helmed and the boat was crewed by Russell and Dan Mills (visiting for the event).
Dan Sayle won the dinghy race in his Laser from a following pack of Lasers from Hardway.
The event was hosted by Fareham S&MBC who did an excellent job of race management and provided a hog roast, entertainment and beer at their club house after the race.
In spite of the wet weather which proved less windy than forecast a good time was had by all, made all the sweeter for PSC by winning the two trophies. |
